Katarzyna Kawa enjoyed an excellent tournament on the clay courts in Bastad, Sweden. Despite being unseeded, the Polish player reached the final, defeating strong opponents along the way: Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Martina Trevisan, Dalma Galfi and Mayar Sherif.
In Saturday’s final, Kawa faced eighth-seeded Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The match ended in a 6:3, 6:4 victory for the 24-year-old Italian after just one hour and fifteen minutes. Cocciaretto thus claimed the second clay-court trophy of her career – her previous one came in Lausanne in 2023.
The first set was full of breaks of serve – the returner won six of the nine games. Kawa managed to hold serve only once. The second set was more evenly contested, but at 5:4 Cocciaretto broke the Pole and closed out the match.
Although the Italian ultimately claimed the title, Katarzyna Kawa’s performance in Bastad deserves great recognition. It was one of her best tournaments in recent times and an encouraging sign ahead of her next events.
